1982. 7 November – Coverage of American sport gets its first regular coverage on UK television when Channel 4 starts broadcasting American football on a weekly basis. 1 August – At midnight, and ahead of the launch of BT Sport, ESPN UK, ESPN America and ESPN Classic close - the latter was not part of the BT/ESPN deal. 9 September – Eurosport becomes the new broadcast of the NFL's Monday Night Football. Eurosport broadcasts the weekly American football game for the next two seasons.
The NFL Show and NFL This Week were a pair of American football programmes broadcast on the BBC. The NFL Show now broadcasts on ITV in the UK and Virgin Media Television in the Republic of Ireland. Neither show had a fixed timeslot, but The NFL Show typically aired either on Saturday evenings or after midnight on BBC One.
18 July – At 6am, TNT Sports launches. It carries the same line-up of programming and sports coverage as BT Sport had done, with the exception of ESPN programming and American College Sport. 24 October – TNT replaces Sky as rights holder to the NBA. The deal will see TNT show more than 250 games each season.
