1983. 7–14 August – The BBC, ITV and Channel 4 show the first World Athletics Championships. 1984. 13 May – The BBC broadcasts full live coverage of the London Marathon for the first time although it had shown some live coverage of the 1982 and 1983 events. 1985. ITV takes over as broadcaster of UK athletics meetings.
28 July–12 August – The BBC airs the 1984 Summer Olympic Games. Due to the Games taking place in Los Angeles, BBC1 stays on the air into the night to provide live coverage of the major events. 30 July.
