Women's British Basketball League. The Women's British Basketball League ( WBBL) is the top-level women's basketball league in Great Britain, founded on 5 June 2014 as the women's counterpart to the British Basketball League (BBL). The 2021-22 WBBL Trophy was a straight knockout competition featuring all thirteen clubs. The top 3 teams from the 2020-21 WBBL Championship ( Sevenoaks Suns, Leicester Riders and London Lions) received a bye to the quarter-finals. The remaining teams were seeded based on their finishing positions in the 2020-21 WBBL Championship.

WBBL Trophy. The ten teams are split into two geographical groups, North and South. Each team plays each other once home or away for a total of 4 games. The top 2 teams in each group progress to the semi-finals, where they play for the two final spots. The 2016-17 Trophy final was won by Sevenoaks Suns, who defeated the Leicester Riders 82-67.

History. The Riders' programme was founded in 2011 at Loughborough University, and entered the National Basketball League Division Two in its first season. In that inaugural season, the Riders finished second in the league and won the post-season playoffs, earning promotion to Division One which at the time was the highest level of women's basketball in the United Kingdom.
