1 August – At midnight, and ahead of the launch of BT Sport, ESPN UK, ESPN America and ESPN Classic close - the latter was not part of the BT/ESPN deal. 9 September – Eurosport becomes the new broadcast of the NFL's Monday Night Football. Eurosport broadcasts the weekly American football game for the next two seasons.
4 December – The standard definition feeds of BT Sport stop broadcasting on Virgin Media. 2019. 2 August – BT Sport 4K is rebranded as BT Sport Ultimate. 3 November – BT Sport ends its coverage of the WTA, having broadcast women's tennis since 2014. The rights pass to Amazon Prime for the 2020 season.
On 1 April 2009, BT Engage IT was created from the merger of two previous BT acquisitions, Lynx Technology and Basilica. Apart from the name change not much else changed in operations for another 12 months. On 14 May 2009, BT said it was cutting up to 15,000 jobs in the coming year after it announced its results for the year to 31 March 2009.
