Kelly was the Chief Reporter and interviewer for British broadcaster BT Sport for a decade. He was part of the live broadcast team mainly for the channel's Champions League and Premier League coverage.
He commentated on a handful of minor Premier League games for Sky Sports in the 1992–93 season, before his Radio 5 Live and Match of the Day career.
