Eurosport replaces Sky Sports, who had been the rights holder for over a decade. 1 August – At midnight, and ahead of the launch of BT Sport, ESPN UK, ESPN America and ESPN Classic close - the latter was not part of the BT/ESPN deal. 9 September – Eurosport becomes the new broadcast of the NFL's Monday Night Football.
18 July – At 6am, TNT Sports launches. It carries the same line-up of programming and sports coverage as BT Sport had done, with the exception of ESPN programming and American College Sport. 24 October – TNT replaces Sky as rights holder to the NBA. The deal will see TNT show more than 250 games each season.
Sky's response came hot on the heels of stories suggesting that they were already having to offer large discounts and deals to new customers in the wake of the competition raised by Amazon Prime and Netflix to Sky's existing online entertainment business, and amidst talk that Amazon were preparing to move into match-day broadcasting also.
To ensure boxing continues on Sky Sports, Sky announces two new boxing contracts, with Top Rank for American and international boxing, and with BOXXER in the UK. The first event from Sky's new deal with Top Rank takes place on 12 June. 13 August – Sky Sports replaces BT Sport as broadcaster of Germany's Bundesliga and Supercup.
In June 2013, following the acquisition of ESPN by BT Sport and the announcement of the removal of Sky Sports 1 & 2 from the Digital Terrestrial Television network by BT, Top Up TV began sending letters to their customers stating that their premium sports package(s) would be discontinued. Sky Sports 1 & 2 were removed on 1 July, and ESPN on 1 August.
