Timeline of other British sports channels. This is a timeline of sports channels in the UK other than Sky Sports, BT Sport and Premier Sports / FreeSports. The timeline also includes sports events which were shown on non-sports non-terrestrial channels. The timeline also includes sports coverage broadcast on streaming services.
These include two channels dedicated to football, a cricket channel and a golf channel. Other sports are moved to two new channels – Action and Arena – and a showcase channel called Sky Sports Main Event is launched which features simulcasts of the top events being shown on Sky Sports that day. Also, Sky Sports News drops the HQ label.
No events. 1983. 6 January – The Channel 9 broadcast of the fifth cricket Test from Sydney is shown on the BBC. This is the first time cricket from abroad is shown live in England. [13] 9–25 June – The BBC shows extensive live coverage of the 1983 Cricket World Cup.
1955-1959. 1955. 22 September – ITV is launched and sport - boxing - is part of the launch night's programmes. 12 October - ITV shows live football for the first time. They cover the second half of a floodlit friendly between Tottenham Hotspur and Vasas Budapest from White Hart Lane, although the foggy weather may have affected the broadcast.

30 December and 6 January 1996 – ITV broadcasts live coverage of semi-finals and final of the inaugural Heineken Cup. [5] 1996. November – Sky Sports begins showing live coverage of England national rugby union team ’s autumn internationals, replacing the BBC which held the right for many decades. 1997.
11–18 July – During its first live broadcast of golf's Open Championship, Sky Sports 1 is rebranded as Sky Sports The Open. This is repeated in subsequent years. 2017. 18–14 May – Sky rebrands Sky Sports 4 as Sky Sports The Players. The channel is dedicated to the coverage of the 2017 Players Championship.
