1937. 21 June – The BBC broadcasts television coverage of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships for the first time. Pre-war daily broadcasts were half an hour to an hour in duration. [ 1] 1946. The original commentator on TV at Wimbledon was Freddie Grisewood up until 1954. One of the most notable British commentators was Dan Maskell, who was known as the BBC's "voice of tennis". Maskell commentated on TV at Wimbledon from 1951 until his retirement in 1991. John Barrett succeeded him in that role until he retired in 2006.
